The Northeastern community turned its attention to racial discrimination in healthcare this spring, when 11 student, faculty, and alumni groups joined forces to create Black Health Matters. With the help of Northeastern’s Student Philanthropy team, the groups launched a Black Health Matters contact-a-thon in June, a 24-hour fundraising push that resulted in meaningful philanthropy to support the following four organizations:
- Action for Boston Community Development Health Services
- Black Women’s Health Imperative
- The Center for Prisoner Health and Human Rights
- The Audre Lorde Project
YES, THERE’S RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN HEALTH CARE. STUDENTS ARE TRYING TO FIX IT.

WE CARE STUDENT EMERGENCY FUND
This spring, as the campus shut down in the interest of public health, many students found themselves facing unexpected challenges. They needed assistance with transportation, short-term accommodations, storage costs, and the loss of income from campus and other jobs.
With the help of donors to the We Care Student Emergency Fund, Northeastern was able to meet these needs, ensuring that our students were never alone while struggling to navigate a challenging and uncertain time.

RESILIENCE IN ACTION
Since the advent of COVID-19, the Northeastern community has quickly pivoted to confront the pandemic. Students on co-ops are working tirelessly on the frontlines; faculty are conducting crucial research to combat the virus; alumni are adapting their businesses to provide vital supplies to healthcare workers; and donors like you are giving generously to those in need. Because of you, Northeastern will emerge stronger and be better prepared to embrace the future.
Our students and faculty continue to show perseverance and strength in tackling the challenging times ahead. Through our Resilience in Action funds, the Northeastern community has joined together to give them the resources they need to thrive.

Evelyn Goroza, S’22, and Thomas Cava, S’22
Evelyn Goroza, S’22, and Thomas Cava, S’22, are fighting COVID-19 while on co-op at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Both students started their jobs in January as patient care technicians, but when their regular floors were transformed into COVID-19 units, they chose to stay and join the effort to save lives.
Mary Jo Ondrechen and Penny Beuning
Professors Mary Jo Ondrechen and Penny Beuning are leading research that is identifying the amino acids that help COVID-19 infect and thrive at the expense of human cells. Their innovative work will enable scientists to better understand the virus and develop new treatments to stop the virus from replicating in the body.
Ali, mori, and Mostafa LoTfi
Mostafa Lotfi and his cousins, Ali and Mori—all of whom studied mechanical engineering at Northeastern—have refocused their family business, Lacerta Group Inc., to make face shields. The plastic packaging manufacturer has nearly 400 employees, plus the in-house capacity to perform every aspect of production for the in-demand apparatus.
