Launching an Entrepreneurial Venture

“I decided to go into engineering instead of just medicine because it’s the intersection between architecture and medicine. I want to build stuff; I want to change the world through medical devices.”

Working Abroad on a Global Project

“People giving back has made a huge impact on my education. I was lucky enough to go to Panama and the stories that we were able to tell were stories that previously no one had written before.”

Giving Back to the Northeastern Community

“I’m a first-generation college student. I often try to find opportunities that I can to help the Northeastern community, whether that’s working with other first-generation students or with members of my sorority.”

In 2022, Northeastern made extraordinary strides in learning, research, and fundraising. These accomplishments are no small feat and could not have been attained without donor support. Here are some of the year’s noteworthy achievements:

Students pursued 12,127 co-op placements,
up from 6,301 in 2006–2007

“I was on co-op at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, as an animal technician under a leading cephalopod expert. I handled maintenance for the lab, and took care of the octopus, squids, and cuttlefish that reside in it. There are nearly 1,000 animals and the work is tough, but it was extremely fulfilling and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. As someone with a passion for the ocean and the animals that live in it, that co-op was more than I could have ever asked for.”

“Getting hands-on experience and real-life knowledge does not even compare to learning from a textbook. I plan on using and applying my experience to my criminal justice studies in the future.”

—SSH’25

Northeastern provided experiential learning
opportunities in 149 countries

“During my time at Northeastern, my most significant academic achievement was taking part in the international dual degree program. Last year, I lived in Madrid, Spain, and studied at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas. I learned a new language, took part in a new culture, and worked a co-op at L.E.K. Consulting. It was the most challenging and rewarding professional experience of my life. I never could’ve imagined that I would embark on a new life in Spain when I started school at Northeastern, but it’s something I’m so glad I was able to do. None of it would have been possible without the support from Northeastern, and donors like you!”

—DMSB’25

“My Dialogue of Civilizations program in Copenhagen, Denmark, was an amazing learning experience. I lived there for four weeks and took two classes, one of which was called Happiness and Sustainability in the Nordics from a Socioeconomic Perspective. This was an all-around amazing educational and cultural experience. I made unbreakable friendships, lived like a Danish local, and got to immediately and directly apply everything I learned to the real world.”

—S’24

More than 28,700 students participated
in 541 campus organizations

“I’m actively involved in NUImpact, Northeastern’s Impact Investment Fund, and I hope to become part of the executive board in the upcoming semesters. This club effectively combines both of my academic concentrations and is a model for my future professional goals. Its focus on investing meaningful capital into innovative, sustainable, and socially impactful startups is a very powerful initiative, because it motivates change while simultaneously generating a return.”

—DMSB’25

“I’ve been involved with Global Medical Brigades since I was a freshman at Northeastern, when I volunteered for a week-long medical brigade to rural Panama. I have since been involved as a leader, leading both in-person and virtual medical brigades, including Northeastern’s first-ever medical brigade to rural Ghana last March. There, we saw more than 800 patients over four medical clinic days, provided community public health education, and surveyed public health and water projects. All this work has inspired my global health minor and my desire to pursue a master’s degree in public health, especially due to its holistic, sustainable, and collaborative nature. I am very thankful to Northeastern for providing experiences and opportunities such as these!”

The university has 160 faculty with interdisciplinary appointments, up 281 percent since 2012

“The frameworks and methods we teach will help students synthesize creative design, medical science, and digital technologies to do good for the world. That is what makes healthcare transformation—and D’Amore-McKim’s program with the Mayo Clinic—so special.”

—MARC MEYER, Robert J. Shillman Professor of Entrepreneurship and the Matthews Distinguished Professor at Northeastern University

“Students complete their internships at the Marine Science Center with newfound confidence in themselves and their abilities, which will serve them in the classroom, lab, and field—and in their lives as they grow into bright, innovative leaders.”

—DR. GEOFFREY TRUSSELL, Doherty Chair in Marine and Environmental Sciences, and Chair, Director, and Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences

HONORED 28 WOMEN INVENTORS AND ENTREPRENEURS,
AWARDING PRIZES TOTALING $500,000

I fundamentally believe that to create an equitable, accessible world, small-business owners, especially from disadvantaged communities, need the tools, capital, funding, and support to even be able to compete. It’s not a good level playing field if people don’t have that.

—CPS’21

My guidance counselor told me Northeastern is where people go to become CEOs, which has been my ambition. Northeastern has been very helpful to me in getting me there.”

—DMSB’21

Over the course of six years, Northeastern’s Giving Day has evolved to become an exciting global participation festival. In 2023, our 24-hour celebration generated $3.2 million from 10,000 donors across 35 countries.
